ADP's API is limited to payroll data exports. HR and payroll teams' operational workflows are locked in the ADP portal. Here's how to automate them.
ADP is the payroll and HR platform for a large fraction of American businesses. ADP does offer APIs — primarily for pulling payroll data into accounting systems and syncing employee records. What those APIs don't cover is the operational layer: the reports HR teams run weekly, the approval workflows managers navigate, the reconciliation processes payroll teams perform before each run.
ADP Workforce Now's interface has been updated with a modern web UI, but underneath, it remains a complex portal that HR and payroll staff navigate manually for most of their daily work. The gap between what ADP's official API exposes and what teams actually do in ADP every day is large.
ADP Workforce Now uses federated authentication — many employers configure ADP to use their corporate SSO (Okta, Azure AD). The session, once established, is stable and cookie-based. Request-layer automation captures the session after the user authenticates normally, then reuses it for subsequent automated requests without touching the SSO flow again.
HR teams are increasingly deploying AI agents for employee queries, policy lookups, and reporting. An AI agent that can pull live ADP data — current leave balances, payroll status, headcount by department — without a human pulling reports manually transforms the response time for HR inquiries. Exposed as MCP tools, ADP workflows become directly callable from Claude or any MCP-compatible AI client.
